Origins and development

The new cemetery opened on 1 November 1872. Extensions completed by 1899 created its present park-like form, main gate and ceremony hall.

Origins: 1872. The cemetery is in Brühl-Beurbarung, at Friedhofstraße 8, 79106 Freiburg im Breisgau. No area figure is included for Freiburg Main Cemetery.

Design and present-day character

A historic park cemetery with radial paths, mature trees, a main ceremony hall, chapels, crematorium and many art-historically significant grave monuments.

Read this character description together with the development of Freiburg Main Cemetery: it identifies what gives the grounds their present identity without turning the cemetery into a purely historical attraction. A visit can focus on spatial structure and named orientation points while leaving individual graves undisturbed.

Connect the account with the grounds

The cemetery map contains 22 named places for Freiburg Main Cemetery. Among them are Main entrance, Funeral hall, Grave and memorial for 27 November 1944. Use these names to relate the historical account to locations visible during a visit, without assuming that every historical feature has its own marker.
